How do you get a usable cover letter out of a generator?
The difference between a cover letter that helps and one that gets skimmed is usually the input, not the tool. Three details do most of the work: the actual job title as written in the posting, the company name, and two or three specifics from your own background that relate to what the role asks for. Vague inputs produce vague letters.
Give it the real responsibilities from the posting rather than the job title alone. A letter that answers what the employer wrote down reads as though you read the posting, because you did.
What should you always edit before sending?
Read the opening line first, since that is the part most likely to sound generic. Replace anything that could apply to any company with one specific, true reason you want this role. That single sentence does more than the rest of the letter combined.
Then check every claim against your actual experience. A generated draft works from what you provide, so if something appears that you cannot back up in an interview, remove it. Finally, cut length. Most hiring teams skim, and a tight three paragraphs beats a full page.
Do cover letters still matter?
It depends on the employer, and being honest about that is more useful than insisting they always matter. Many applications mark them optional, and some systems barely surface them. Where they do count is with smaller teams, roles where motivation matters, and any case where your background needs one line of context that a resume cannot give, such as a career change or a gap.
The practical rule: if the field exists and it takes you three minutes with a draft to fill, fill it. If it is genuinely optional and your letter would be filler, your time is better spent on the screening questions.
Where does this fit with the rest of your application?
A cover letter is one field among many. The slowest part of most applications is the work history and the screening questions, which is what the VeloApply extension handles on the form itself, including on Workday and other enterprise systems. You review everything before it is submitted.
Frequently asked questions
Is this cover letter generator free?
You can create up to 15 free drafts in this browser without signing up. Continued AI drafting is available with a paid subscription.
Will employers know a cover letter was AI-assisted?
There is no reliable detector for this, and the more useful question is whether the letter is specific and true. A draft you edited with real detail from your own experience reads like you, because the substance is yours.
Should I use the same cover letter for every job?
No. Keep the structure and change the specifics: the role, the company, and the reason you are applying to this one. Sending an identical letter is usually obvious.
How long should a cover letter be?
Three short paragraphs is usually enough. Aim for something a busy person can read in under a minute.
