Overview
An ATS resume checker analyzes your resume against a job description and shows you how well it matches, what keywords are missing, and whether the formatting will parse correctly in applicant tracking systems.
How it works
VeloApply includes a resume score tool that checks your resume against any specific job description, showing your match rate, missing keywords, and formatting issues. Upload your resume, paste the job description, and get an instant score with actionable recommendations.

Why this matters
Applicant tracking systems read your resume before a person does. If the parser cannot read a section, that section may as well not be there. This check shows you what a parser actually pulls out of your file.
What an ATS actually does with your resume
An applicant tracking system is a database, not a judge. When you upload a file it extracts the text, tries to identify sections such as experience and education, and stores the result as structured fields. Recruiters then search and filter that database. Nothing about this process rewards visual design. It rewards being readable.
The formatting choices that break parsing
- Multi column layouts, which frequently extract in the wrong order so your job titles end up separated from the dates.
- Text inside tables, headers or footers, which some parsers skip entirely.
- Skills shown as graphics, star ratings or progress bars, which contain no text at all.
- Contact details placed in the header, which is one of the most common reasons a phone number goes missing.
- Non standard section names such as 'Where I have worked' instead of 'Experience'.
How to read the result
Look at the extracted text in the order it appears. If your most recent role is not near the top, if dates are separated from the roles they belong to, or if a whole section is missing, a real parser is likely to make the same mistake. Fix the layout rather than the wording.
What this check does not tell you
It does not score your chances, and no tool honestly can, because shortlisting depends on the specific role and the people reading. Treat a clean parse as the minimum requirement rather than as a prediction.
Common questions
Do applicant tracking systems reject resumes automatically?
Most do not auto reject on formatting. What happens is worse in practice: your details get stored incorrectly or incompletely, so you do not appear in the searches recruiters run.
Should I use a plain resume with no design at all?
No. A clean single column layout with standard section headings parses reliably and still looks professional. The problem is columns, tables and graphics, not visual quality.
Is a PDF or a Word file better for an ATS?
Both parse well when the layout is simple. A PDF exported from a word processor is fine; a PDF that is really a scanned image is not, because there is no text to extract.
