What a strong software engineer resume looks like
Hiring managers scan a software engineer resume for four things: a stack that matches their needs, proof of system ownership, quantified impact, and collaboration signals. Daniel leads with a summary naming his specialty, then an experience section where every bullet pairs an action verb with a metric. Instead of vague claims like being a team player, he writes that he mentored four junior engineers and held primary on-call for a twelve-service platform. That specificity is what gets interviews.
Notice the formula behind each bullet: verb, what he did, and the measured result. Recruiters searching for Kubernetes or gRPC find them in both the summary and the skills list, which mirrors typical job-description wording and keeps the resume searchable without keyword stuffing. The single-column layout parses cleanly in applicant tracking systems, and the education section stays short because six years of shipped systems carry the resume.

Professional Summary
Backend-leaning software engineer with 6 years of experience building distributed systems that serve 40M+ requests per day. Specializes in API design, latency reduction, and reliability engineering, with a record of cutting p99 latency 75% and holding 99.99% uptime across a 12-service platform. Mentors junior engineers and sets code review standards. Seeking a senior backend role where system design and on-call excellence matter.
Experience
Senior Software Engineer, Relay Systems, 2022 - Present
- Cut p99 checkout API latency from 850ms to 210ms by rebuilding the caching layer with Redis read replicas, lifting conversion 6% for 2M monthly users.
- Led migration of 12 microservices from REST to gRPC, shrinking inter-service payloads 40% and standardizing the team's API contract review process.
- Own primary on-call rotation for the payments platform, driving incident volume down 55% year over year while holding a 99.99% uptime SLA.
Software Engineer, Bluepeak Labs, 2019 - 2022
- Shipped an event-driven order pipeline on Kafka processing 40M events per day, replacing nightly batch jobs and cutting data freshness from 24 hours to under 2 minutes.
- Designed a Go rate-limiting service that absorbed 3x holiday traffic spikes with zero 5xx errors across 8 downstream services.
- Raised backend test coverage from 41% to 78%, which cut production regressions in half within a single quarter.
Junior Software Engineer, Northloop Technologies, 2018 - 2019
- Built internal dashboards in Python and React used by 60 support agents, reducing average ticket triage time from 12 minutes to 4.
- Automated deploys with Docker and GitHub Actions, moving the team from 1 painful monthly release to 20+ one-click releases per quarter.
- Resolved 90+ customer portal bugs in the first year with a 94% code-review acceptance rate, the highest on the team.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect, 2023
Key skills to include
- Distributed systems: Employers hiring software engineers want people who can reason about services that talk to each other, handle failures gracefully, and scale under real traffic loads.
- API design: Clean, versioned APIs decide how fast other teams can build on your work, so contract design and documentation are core signals of seniority.
- Observability and incident response: On-call ownership separates engineers who ship features from those who keep them running, and hiring managers probe this in every senior interview loop.
- Testing at scale: Unit, integration, and load tests protect velocity as teams grow, and coverage trends tell a reviewer you care about long-term code health.
- Code review and mentoring: Senior engineers multiply their impact through others, so evidence of thoughtful reviews and mentored juniors carries real weight.
- Cloud and containers: Most backends run on AWS or GCP with Kubernetes, so hands-on deployment and infrastructure skills are expected, not optional.
- Performance tuning: Latency and throughput numbers are the most credible proof of impact on a backend resume, and tuning skill shows deep systems understanding.
How to write each section
Summary
Keep the summary to three or four lines: years of experience, your specialty (backend, distributed systems, APIs), and one standout metric like a latency cut or uptime record. Skip objectives and soft-skill lists. This is the first thing a hiring manager reads, so make every clause earn its place with a concrete number.
Experience
List roles in reverse chronological order with three to four bullets each. Start every bullet with an action verb and end it with a metric: latency reduced, requests handled, uptime held, incidents cut. Describe the systems you owned, not just tickets you closed, and name the technologies you used so keyword scans find them.
Skills
Group eight to twelve hard skills: languages, databases, messaging systems, cloud platforms, and tools like Kubernetes or Prometheus. Mirror the wording from job descriptions you target, since both recruiters and ATS software search for exact terms. Leave out soft skills and anything you could not discuss in an interview.
Education
One line for the degree, school, and graduation year is enough for most software engineers. Add certifications like AWS Solutions Architect only if relevant to the roles you want. Move education below experience once you have three or more years of professional work, and never list coursework unless you are a recent graduate.
ATS tips for software engineer resumes
- Mirror the job description's wording for your core skills: if it says PostgreSQL, write PostgreSQL, not Postgres, so automated keyword matching scores you correctly.
- Use a single-column layout with standard section headings like Experience and Skills. Multi-column designs and graphics confuse parsers and can scramble your bullet order.
- Spell out acronyms once, such as continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), because some systems index the full phrase and others index the abbreviation.
- Save and submit as a clean PDF or .docx, and avoid headers, footers, and tables for critical content, since several tracking systems fail to read text inside them.

Software Engineer resume FAQs
Should I list every programming language I know on a software engineer resume?
No. List the languages you can actually interview in, grouped by strength if you want. A short, honest list of five or six languages beats a long one that invites questions you cannot answer. If a job asks for a language you used years ago, mention it in that application and refresh yourself before the interview.
How do I show impact if most of my work was on internal tools?
Internal work still has metrics: hours saved per week, teams using the tool, error rates reduced, or deploy time shortened. Talk to the people who used your tool and ask what changed for them. Even a rough before-and-after number makes an internal project read like real impact.
Is a projects section worth including with five years of experience?
Only if the project adds something your jobs do not. A well-known open source contribution or a side project with real users can strengthen a resume, but a tutorial clone will not. With several years of experience, your work history should carry the page, so drop projects that repeat what your jobs already prove.
How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page for under five years of experience, two pages once you have senior-level scope to show. The deciding factor is density: every line should carry a metric or a decision you made. If you are stretching to fill a second page, cut it back to one strong page.
