What a strong financial analyst resume looks like
A strong financial analyst resume proves that your analysis changed decisions. Hiring managers in FP&A, corporate finance, and investment teams see hundreds of resumes that list "financial modeling" and "variance analysis" as skills. The ones that advance show the size of what you touched and what happened because of it: a $60M annual budget you owned, a forecast that came within 2% of actuals, a pricing analysis that added margin points. Lead every role with scope, then stack bullets where each one ends in a business result, not a task description.
Technical precision matters as much as the numbers. Name the exact tools and the exact deliverables: a driver-based revenue model in Excel, a Power BI variance dashboard refreshed monthly, SQL queries against the data warehouse. Generic claims like "advanced Excel" mean nothing; "built a 3-statement operating model with scenario toggles used in quarterly board prep" means everything. If you supported a specific business unit, say which one and how big it was, since a $200M division and a $5M startup need very different analysts.

SKILLS
Financial modeling · Budgeting & forecasting · Variance analysis · Excel (Power Query, pivot tables, scenario modeling) · SQL · Power BI · Hyperion · NetSuite · Business case development · Management reporting · SaaS metrics (ARR, NRR, CAC)
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
B.S. in Finance, University of Illinois Chicago (2019)
CFA Level II Candidate (exam June 2026)
Key skills to include
- Financial modeling. Name the model type: 3-statement, driver-based, DCF, cohort. The specific deliverable proves the skill far better than the word "modeling" alone.
- Budgeting and forecasting. State the budget size and cycle you owned. "Owned the $180M annual budget" is the line hiring managers scan for first.
- Variance analysis. Show that your analysis led somewhere: a flagged variance, an investigation, a corrective action. Analysis without consequence is just reporting.
- Excel at depth. Power Query, pivot tables, scenario modeling, and automation separate real Excel users from everyone who lists it. Be specific.
- SQL and BI tools. Pulling your own data instead of waiting on it is a major advantage. Power BI, Tableau, or Looker plus basic SQL covers most postings.
- Business partnership. FP&A is a service role. Show you worked with operators: sales, department heads, or the CFO, and that they acted on your work.
- Industry metrics. SaaS analysts should know ARR, NRR, and CAC. Manufacturing analysts should know margin by SKU and labor variance. Speak the unit economics of your sector.
How to write each section
Summary
Open with years of experience and the finance function (FP&A, corporate finance, investment analysis). Add the scale you have worked at, in revenue or budget dollars, and your one or two strongest results: forecast accuracy, savings identified, or a reporting transformation. Four lines maximum; finance hiring managers reward density.
Experience
Structure each role as scope, then models, then impact. Scope: budget size, business unit revenue, number of stakeholders. Models: what you built and in which tools. Impact: forecast accuracy, savings, hours automated, decisions supported. Quantify the dollar amounts wherever you truthfully can; in finance, the numbers are the resume.
Skills
Group into modeling and analysis, tools and systems, and business knowledge. Mirror the posting's exact tool names: Hyperion, Anaplan, Adaptive, NetSuite, and specific BI platforms all appear as hard requirements. Only claim advanced Excel techniques you could demonstrate in a case interview.
Education
A finance, accounting, or economics degree is standard. The CFA candidacy line belongs here with the exam level and date. Within three years of graduation, a strong GPA (3.5+) can stay; after that, let the work results carry the page.
ATS tips for financial analyst resumes
- Mirror the function's keywords. FP&A postings repeat "budgeting," "forecasting," "variance analysis," and "financial modeling." Use those exact phrases rather than synonyms.
- List systems by name. Hyperion, Anaplan, Adaptive Insights, NetSuite, SAP: these are literal ATS search terms. A tools line with the right names clears automated screens.
- Write out the certification. "CFA Level II Candidate" should appear in full at least once so both the abbreviation and the program name match.
- Keep numbers as numerals. Write $180M and 3%, not "one hundred eighty million." ATS parsers and human skimmers both read numerals faster.

Financial analyst resume FAQs
What should a financial analyst resume emphasize?
Decision impact. Hiring managers want to see that your models, forecasts, and variance analysis changed what the business did. Lead with the size of the budgets you touched, the accuracy of your forecasts, and any cost savings or revenue your analysis supported.
How technical should a financial analyst resume be?
Name your tools precisely: Excel with Power Query, SQL, Power BI or Tableau, and the ERP or planning system you used. But keep the focus on business outcomes. A hiring manager cares that your model was right and used, not just that you built it.
Do I need a CFA for financial analyst roles?
Not for most corporate FP&A roles, where experience and Excel skill matter more. The CFA helps for investment-side or research roles. If you are a candidate, write "CFA Level II Candidate" with the exam date rather than leaving it vague.
How do I show Excel skills without just writing Excel?
Describe what you built: a 3-statement operating model, a driver-based forecast, or an automated variance dashboard. Naming the deliverable proves the skill. Advanced functions like INDEX-MATCH, Power Query, or VBA macros are worth one line if the posting asks for them.
Should a financial analyst resume include a GPA?
Only within your first two or three years out of school, and only if it is 3.5 or above. After that, your work results replace it. Relevant coursework in corporate finance or accounting can stay a little longer if you are pivoting into the field.
